Victorian Government Opens $24 Million Local Sports Infrastructure Fund for 2026–27 Applications

Councils have until 28 July to secure funding for community facilities, sports lighting and planning projects that can transform local sport.

The Victorian Government has officially opened applications for the 2026–27 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund (LSIF), providing local councils with another opportunity to secure funding for vital community sporting infrastructure projects across the state.

Applications opened on 28 May 2026 and will close at 5:00pm on 28 July 2026, with successful projects expected to be announced from October 2026.

The competitive funding program is designed to help Victorian communities deliver new and upgraded sporting facilities that encourage greater participation, improve accessibility and create more inclusive environments for clubs, players and volunteers.

Three Funding Streams Available

The 2026–27 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund will support projects across three key categories:

  • Community Facilities – Construction, redevelopment or significant upgrades to sporting and community facilities.
  • Community Sports Lighting – Installation or upgrade of sports lighting to increase participation opportunities, improve safety and extend facility usage.
  • Planning – Funding for feasibility studies, master plans and strategic planning that prepare future infrastructure projects.

The program aligns with the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions’ priorities of creating jobs, supporting local industries and building stronger, more vibrant communities throughout Victoria.

Who Can Apply?

Importantly, the Fund is only open to Victorian Local Government Authorities (LGAs) and Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV).

Sporting clubs, leagues, associations, schools, businesses and community organisations cannot apply directly for funding.

Instead, clubs looking to secure infrastructure funding must work closely with their local council to develop and support projects before an application is submitted.

For many grassroots football clubs, this makes proactive engagement with council more important than ever.

Why Clubs Should Act Now

Although clubs cannot lodge applications themselves, they play a critical role in identifying infrastructure priorities and working collaboratively with councils.

Projects that demonstrate strong community demand, strategic planning and partnerships often stand out during the assessment process.

Whether it’s new changerooms, upgraded lighting, improved female-friendly facilities, accessibility improvements or future master planning, now is the time for clubs to present their infrastructure needs to council.

The Victorian Government has also developed a Community Organisation Expression of Interest Form, allowing councils to gather project ideas from local sporting organisations before finalising their submissions.

Early Collaboration Is Essential

Councils are required to consult with their Sport and Recreation Victoria representative before submitting applications, ensuring projects meet eligibility requirements and align with program objectives.

Applications must include:

  • An online application.
  • Mandatory supporting documentation.
  • Assessment criteria responses.
  • Supporting documents submitted separately via email.

Given the competitive nature of the program, councils are encouraged to begin preparing submissions well before the closing date.
